Nagasaki: A Hidden Gem of Japan
Located in the southwest of Japan’s Kyushu Island, Nagasaki is a city with a rich history and cultural heritage. Known primarily for being the second city to be devastated by an atomic bomb, Nagasaki has a darker side to its past. However, today, Nagasaki is a city that has overcome the tragedy to become a hub of creativity and a unique blend of Japanese and international cultures. As a National Geographic Journalist, I had the pleasure of exploring Nagasaki and experiencing all that it had to offer.
Scenery and Attractions
The scenery of Nagasaki is diverse and stunning, from its mountainous landscapes to its beautiful coastal views. What I loved most about Nagasaki is how the city has preserved and adapted its historical sites to become modern cultural centers that are perfect for both tourists and locals.
Some of the must-visit attractions include the Nagasaki Peace Park, the Atomic Bomb Museum, and the Glover Garden. Additionally, the Nagasaki Lantern Festival held every year is a highlight of the city’s attractions.
The Cost of Living in Nagasaki
The cost of living in Nagasaki is relatively affordable as opposed to other Japanese cities. As a tourist, you can expect to spend around $50-$70 per day, depending on your lifestyle choices. The figure includes accommodation, transportation, food, and attractions fees.
