Fukuyama: The Scenic Charm of Japan’s Castle City
Nestled in Hiroshima Prefecture, Fukuyama is a city that exudes charm and beauty with its winding rivers, lush greenery, and historic landmarks. As a National Geography journalist, I ventured to this captivating city to get a closer look at what makes it a must-visit destination for travelers.
Scenery and Highlights
The moment I arrived in Fukuyama, I was enchanted by the stunning panorama of the city from the top of Fukuyama Castle. The sprawling cityscape surrounded by verdant hills and the sea is a sight to behold. It’s no surprise that the castle is one of the most popular attractions the city has to offer. Wandering around the castle grounds is a great way to admire the scenery while brushing up on the city’s history.
Another spot I enjoyed visiting was Sensui Island, a small island on the Ota River. It’s a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the city’s natural beauty. Another highlight is Tomo no Ura, a picturesque fishing village with traditional architecture.
The city’s shopping district located around Shinmachi street was another favorite spot of mine. The street is lined with boutiques, cafes, and restaurants, which makes it a great place to spend an afternoon. It’s a perfect spot to indulge in street food while shopping.
Food and Culture
Speaking of food, Fukuyama’s street food is not to be missed! Some of my favorites include Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake), Yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), and Oysters. One must-visit spot for street food is the Morning Market which is held every Saturday & Sunday morning in the area around the Fukuyama Station South Entrance. Here, you can indulge in some of the best street foods Fukuyama has to offer.
