Srettha Thavisin, a former Thai property tycoon and candidate of the Pheu Thai Party, has become Thailand’s 30th prime minister. He was nominated after Pita Limjaroenrat, leader of the Move Forward Party, faced opposition from senators who emerged from the previous coup. The Pheu Thai Party formed a new coalition without the Move Forward Party due to their refusal to withdraw their pledge to amend the lese majeste law. Srettha has been criticized for including pro-junta parties in the coalition. He has also been accused of tax evasion and sued the whistleblower for defamation. Srettha is known as a family man and soccer fan, having supported Liverpool FC and contributing to football development in Thailand. He entered politics with a focus on economic policy and addressing social inequality. Thaksin Shinawatra, the former PM, expressed his support for Srettha becoming prime minister. This became a reality when Thaksin returned to Thailand on the same day that Srettha was elected.
