US court frees man convicted in death of Thai grandfather in 2021

A United States court ordered the release on probation of an African-American man convicted in the death of Thai man, Vicha Ratanaphakdee, in San Francisco in 2021. The man, Antoine Watson, was 19 at the time of the incident where he struck Vicha, causing his death. Watson claimed he did not know Vicha was Asian and did not intend to kill him. After five years of proceedings, Watson was sentenced to eight years in prison, but the court ordered his immediate release, with the remaining three years of the sentence suspended.
