The death toll from a fast-moving wildfire on the Maui island of Hawaii has reached 89, making it the deadliest US wildfire in over a century. Survivors described the surreal devastation left in the wake of the fire, with flattened homes, burned-out cars, and ashy lots where buildings once stood. The fire, fueled by a dry summer and strong winds, caused widespread destruction in Lahaina and other West Maui communities. Many residents reported not receiving a warning before the flames engulfed their homes. The fire is projected to be the second-costliest disaster in Hawaii’s history and the deadliest wildfire in the US since the 2018 Camp Fire in California.
