The Thai government is considering introducing a visa exemption for Chinese tourists to boost arrivals, which have fallen short of target. Only two million Chinese tourists visited Thailand from January to July, instead of the estimated 5 to 7 million, due to the economic slowdown in China. Safety concerns and the option to travel within their own country, which is cheaper, have also deterred Chinese tourists. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is open to the proposal but security agencies have to assess the potential risk of criminal elements taking advantage of the visa exemption. Visa exemption is expected to be temporary, starting in October.
