The Thai elephant Sak Surin has finally returned home after spending 22 years in Sri Lanka. Accompanied by a team of veterinarians and mahouts, Sak Surin was transported in a specially designed cage on an Ilyushin IL-76 airplane. The elephant remained calm during the five-hour journey and underwent a thorough health examination upon landing in Chiang Mai. Sak Surin will now spend 30 days in quarantine at the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre before being reintegrated with other resident elephants. The repatriation effort cost a total of 19.5 million baht.
