Andrea Gonzalez, the ex-running mate of assassinated Ecuadorean presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, will run for president in his place in the upcoming August 20 elections, according to their party, the Construye party. Villavicencio, a journalist and anti-corruption crusader, was fatally shot after leaving a campaign rally in Quito. President Guillermo Lasso has attributed the murder to organized crime. Gonzalez, who has a background in environmental advocacy and combating wildlife trafficking, is set to participate in Sunday’s presidential debate in Quito. The party will announce the vice presidential candidate soon. Six Colombians have been arrested and another killed in relation to the assassination.
