Delfina Guiwan, a resident of an abandoned village near the Mayon volcano in the Philippines, risks her life to retrieve her daughter’s school uniform and feed her pigs. Despite warnings from authorities, Guiwan and many other poor villagers continue to live within the dangerous 6-kilometer radius of the volcano. The area is prone to volcanic eruptions, pyroclastic flows, and lahar, a muddy stream of volcanic ash and rocks. The government has evacuated over 20,000 villagers to temporary shelters, but the number could increase if the eruption becomes more violent. Poverty and lack of livelihood options force many to continue living in high-risk areas.
