Two of the most popular sports, men’s football and women’s volleyball, are entangled with politics in Thailand. Pita Limchareonrat, a prominent political figure, is being closely watched to see if he could become the country’s next Prime Minister. A controversy arose when Ajcharaporn Kongyot flashed a three-finger salute while taking a photo with Pita, causing conservatives to criticize her. However, it was later revealed that the photo was taken before Pita joined the frame and the gesture was simply a tactical communication to teammates. In another instance, General Prawit Wongsuwan asked the President of the Thai Football Association to resign following Thailand’s failures in the SEA Games 2023. Football fans are concerned about political interference and potential consequences.
