Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health and the Civil Service Commission have announced plans to create 35,000 positions for doctors and 140,000 positions for nurses in the next three years. This is to address the shortage of medical staff and the brain drain from the state sector, particularly among interns. In order to prevent doctors from leaving for higher-paying private hospitals, certain regulations will be reviewed to upgrade their status to specialists. In addition, the Medical Council has recommended that interns work at local hospitals for at least two years instead of one. Overwork and a shortage of doctors are cited as reasons for the high turnover rate.
