Kuwait has banned the film “Barbie” from cinemas due to concerns about “public ethics”, according to officials. The Kuwaiti cinema censorship committee stated that the film promoted ideas and beliefs that are considered alien to Kuwaiti society and public order. The committee has the authority to censor scenes that go against public ethics but can also ban films entirely if they contain concepts, messages, or behaviors that are deemed unacceptable. Gulf Arab states, including Kuwait, routinely censor films with LGBTQ references. “Barbie” has been banned in Lebanon for allegedly promoting homosexuality, despite not containing any explicit references to same-sex relationships.
