Fires have broken out in the Kuan Kreng peat swamp forest, located in Thailand’s Nakhon Si Thammarat province. Over 165 hectares of the forest have been destroyed, and efforts to control the fires have been hindered by strong winds and difficult terrain. The only road to the local community and a bulrush-producing organization has been closed, and firebreaks have been constructed. Local officials suspect the fires were caused by poachers. The Kuan Kren peat swamp forest is home to diverse marine species and macaque monkeys.
