A group of Gabonese military officers announced on television that they had taken power after President Ali Bongo’s re-election. They declared the cancellation of the election results and dissolution of all institutions of the republic. Gunfire was heard in the capital, Libreville, during the announcement. The soldiers claimed to be acting on behalf of the “Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions”. The announcement came shortly after the national election authority declared Bongo as the winner of the election. Bongo’s main rival, Albert Ondo Ossa, had disputed the results and called for a peaceful transfer of power.
