Acute water shortages in Huai Kha Khaeng wildlife sanctuary have forced elephants to venture out and search for water and food on surrounding farmland. The sanctuary has been experiencing a water shortage since late last year, exacerbated by El NiƱo, and natural water sources have dried up. This has led to incidents such as a villager being stomped to death by a wild elephant. The Huai Kha Khaeng wildlife breeding station, which houses 400 animals, has managed to secure sufficient water and food, and has erected a fence to prevent elephants from causing damage.
