The recent accident on an escalator at Don Mueang airport may have been caused by a small object falling into the escalator, creating a gap in the floor panel that trapped a passenger’s leg before it stopped automatically. An advisor to the Thai Engineering Institute suggested that the bolt attaching the floor to the escalator rail had failed, causing the panel to fall. The airport had hired the company responsible for maintaining the escalator and it was checked daily, making poor maintenance an unlikely cause. The advisor also dismissed claims that the escalator’s age was a factor, highlighting its normal life span of 45 years. To ensure safety, passengers are advised to use the handrail and avoid using their cell phone.
