Artificial intelligence and facial recognition technology are seen as the future of crime-fighting, but British police believe that they should be used in conjunction with “super-recognisers”, officers with exceptional memory for faces. Thames Valley Police have recruited about 20 super-recognisers who have the ability to identify people from outdated photographs. This method has proved effective in criminal investigations, such as identifying 600 London rioters in 2011. Super-recognisers are also being deployed outside bars and nightclubs to spot known perpetrators of sexual assault. The demand for super-recognisers is growing internationally, particularly in Germany and Australia.
