A fire broke out in a five-story building in Johannesburg that was occupied by homeless people and squatters, resulting in the deaths of at least 73 individuals. Some residents attempted to escape the fire by jumping out of windows, including individuals who threw babies out in an effort to save them. It is estimated that around 200 people were living in the building, many of whom were foreign nationals. The building, owned by the city of Johannesburg, was previously a “pass” office during apartheid and is considered a heritage site. The cause of the fire is believed to be a candle.
