Thai authorities have seized over 510 tonnes of aniline, a precursor chemical for the production of the powerful opioid fentanyl. The chemical, imported into Thailand by two logistics companies without the necessary permits, was confiscated at a warehouse in Laem Chabang deep-sea port. Aniline, when combined with other chemicals, can be used to produce fentanyl, which is classified as a Category 2 narcotic in Thailand. The amount of aniline seized could have been used to produce approximately 85,000kg of fentanyl. Aniline is a commonly used commodity chemical, while fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid.
