YouTube is taking steps to combat spam on its platform, particularly in relation to the Shorts feature. Starting August 31st, YouTube will deactivate links in Shorts descriptions, comments, and the vertical live feed, as well as remove the ability to click on social media icons on desktop channel banners. However, the platform will introduce new clickable links on creators’ channels, appearing next to the Subscribe button, which can direct users to merchandise sites or social media accounts. YouTube also plans to improve its strategies for identifying and removing impersonation accounts, and is holding more comments for review.
