X, previously known as Twitter, was found to be slowing down traffic to websites that Elon Musk, the owner of the social network, publicly dislikes. Websites including The New York Times, Instagram, Facebook, Bluesky, Threads, Reuters, and Substack experienced delays of about five seconds when accessing their links on X. The delays were noticed by users on the Hacker News forum and were first reported by The Washington Post. This potentially affected the traffic and ad revenue for these companies. Other major news organizations and websites were unaffected. Musk has previously blocked links to competitors and attacked the New York Times.
