Google’s Waymo and GM’s Cruise have received approval from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to charge fares for fully driverless rides in San Francisco at any time of day. Waymo plans to gradually welcome more riders and begin charging fares for rider-only trips in the coming weeks. Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt expressed enthusiasm over the approval, emphasizing their shared commitment to safer and more accessible transportation options. Previously, Cruise could only offer fared rides in limited areas without a safety driver during late hours. The decision was made after evaluating licensing requirements and considering public testimonies.
