The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is cracking down on fake reviews and testimonials and plans to ban businesses from using phony followers and views to inflate their social media metrics. The rule, which is close to being finalized, includes steep penalties of up to $50,000 for businesses caught peddling fake reviews. The FTC aims to ban businesses from writing or selling fake reviews and testimonials or obtaining and disseminating reviews they know are fake. The rule will also outlaw review hijacking, offering compensation for reviews, and using intimidation tactics to suppress negative reviews. Public comments on the rule will be accepted for 60 days before finalization.
