In preparation for the 2023-24 school year, Mason City Community School District in Iowa removed 19 books, including an entire book series, from shelves based on the guidance of an AI chatbot called ChatGPT. The decision was prompted by a recent Iowa state legislation called Senate File 496, which prohibits discussions on “gender identity” and “sexual orientation” for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. The new law also requires age-appropriate books in libraries and makes books with depictions of sex illegal. Administrators used ChatGPT to determine if a book contained explicit sexual content. However, there were discrepancies between ChatGPT’s answers and tests conducted by other sources. The list of banned books included titles such as “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Looking for Alaska,” and “The Color Purple.”
