Rocket Lab has been contracted by NASA to launch two small satellites as part of the PREFIRE mission, which aims to gather data on how far-infrared energy is emitted at the Earth’s poles. Equipped with thermal IR spectrometers, these bread loaf-sized satellites will collect data for at least 10 months and help scientists understand the impact of climate change on polar ice shelves. The launches, scheduled for May 2024, will take place in New Zealand and are part of NASA’s VADR program. This marks the 7th and 8th launches Rocket Lab has conducted on behalf of NASA since 2018.
