Several attendees at the hacking conference Def Con reported seeing mysterious and persistent pop-ups on their iPhones prompting them to use their Apple ID to connect to an Apple TV or share a password with an Apple TV nearby. These alerts, which confused and surprised attendees, were later revealed to be part of a research project carried out by security researcher Jae Bochs. The purpose of the experiment was to remind people to turn off Bluetooth and to have a laugh, but it remains unclear if any data was collected or if the feature could be abused for malicious attacks. Some attendees found the experiment amusing, while others criticized it for potentially abusing users. Apple has not commented on the matter.
