Mars is much drier than Earth’s driest desert, but there is still ice flowing slowly on its surface. NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured an image of a glacier-like “icy flow” using its High-Resolution Imaging Experiment (HiRISE) camera. Planetary scientists have found similar examples of glacier-like landforms across the surface of Mars, even outside of the polar regions. These ice flows tend to form on rocky debris inside valleys and craters and leave linear patterns that reveal the history of ice flow. While Mars is much drier now, evidence of its past water-rich environment is still being explored by the Perseverance rover.
