Instagram has reintroduced “unconnected content” or posts from accounts users don’t follow, which caused uproar on the platform last summer. The increased prevalence of recommendations is partly due to the growing demand for short-form video. However, this shift poses challenges for Instagram in terms of policy and communication. To address this issue, Meta, Instagram’s parent company, has published 22 “system cards” to explain to users why they see certain content. The cards aim to make Meta’s role in shaping feeds more transparent and give users a sense of control over their experiences. However, some may view the cards as confirmation that social media apps are engineered to be addictive.
