Jury rules against Meta and YouTube in social media addiction case

Meta and YouTube were found negligent in a trial over social media addiction in Los Angeles. They were ordered to pay $6 million in damages to a woman, referred to as “K.G.M,” who claimed harm from addictive features as a child. TikTok and Snap settled ahead of the trial. Meta was to pay 70% of compensatory damages with YouTube covering the rest, plus $3 million in punitive damages. The trial highlighted concerns about social media platforms harming minors. Meta faced another legal setback in New Mexico, being ordered to pay $375 million in penalties, with plans to appeal.
