Much like its rebellious, shapeshifting lead, Nimona doesn’t look quite like anything we’ve seen before in animation. The film adapts ND Stevenson’s award-winning graphic novel of the same name but with its own distinctive 2D stylings. The animators were inspired by Stevenson’s work and aimed to maintain the graphic novel quality throughout the film. The visual concept for Nimona focused on the character of Nimona herself, which informed the design of the entire kingdom. The production design team worked to interpret Stevenson’s novel into a 3D image, creating a stylized and whimsical world. The animation techniques used in Nimona reflect the themes of acceptance and getting to know someone for who they truly are. The film employs atmospheric perspective, shadowing, shapes, and lighting to convey characters’ attitudes towards acceptance. Nimona is now streaming on Netflix.
