In macOS Sonoma, Apple has made significant changes to the widget function. Previously, widgets were mainly kept hidden in the Notifications Center panel, but now they can be placed on the desktop and are interactive. Widgets can still be stored in the Notification Center if desired, but they can also be dragged onto the desktop. Apple provides placement guidance for subsequent widgets by displaying an outline to indicate where they can be positioned. The new “Edit Widgets…” option in the desktop menu allows users to access a widget gallery, which includes widgets from their iPhones thanks to a new Continuity feature. As third-party developers have yet to incorporate interactivity into their Mac widgets, users can try out iPhone widgets for a similar experience. Apple’s own widgets offer some interactive features, such as controlling specific accessories through the Home app widget. Customization options for widgets are available in the contextual menu, and users can choose from Small, Medium, and Large sizes. Additionally, widgets blend into the background by adopting the color of the wallpaper when not in use. Users can also opt for a monochrome widget style for a more consistent appearance. Apple’s new approach to Mac widgets encourages users to actively incorporate them into their workspace.
