Electrify America, the EV charging company established by Volkswagen following its diesel emissions scandal, has announced the launch of a new 75 MW solar farm in Southern California. The solar farm was developed by Terra-Gen, with Electrify America entering into a 15-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with the renewable energy developer. Through the VPPA, Electrify America assumes some risk but also aims to contribute to decarbonizing the grid while potentially benefiting from rising energy prices. The company claims that the solar farm’s peak energy generation is equivalent to that drawn by 500 EVs charging simultaneously, and its annual production is projected at 225 Gigawatt-hours.
