California has expanded its pilot program for a digital driver’s license called the “mDL.” The mobile ID can be used for airport security and age verification for alcohol purchases. However, physical IDs still need to be carried as not all businesses and state agencies accept the mDL. The app assures that personal data is not permanently stored, but it does retain the phone number and an encrypted photo of the ID card. The mDL is not yet compatible with Apple or Google wallets, but other platforms will be supported in the future.
