A team of astronomers, led by Steven Finkelstein from the University of Texas at Austin, has used advanced instruments to calculate a more accurate age of Maisie’s galaxy. Initially estimated to be 290 million years after the Big Bang, it is now believed to be 390 million years old, making it one of the oldest recorded star systems. This discovery was made possible by the spectroscopic confirmation conducted by the James Webb Space Telescope’s Near InfraRed Spectrograph, which assigned a redshift of z=11.4 to Maisie’s galaxy. The team is now evaluating other systems that could be even older.
