Several popular third-party Reddit apps are no longer operational or are now charging users for access due to the website’s new API rules. Apollo founder Christian Selig stated that Reddit cut off the app’s access to content prematurely, making it financially unviable to keep the app running. Similarly, BaconReader and Sync for Reddit have also been affected by the changes. However, Relay for Reddit and Now for Reddit are planning to introduce subscriptions to cover the cost of API access. Reddit’s decision to charge for API access was primarily to monetize data used to train large language models for generative AI. Some subreddits staged protests by going private, affecting advertising revenue, prompting threats of removal if not reopened.
