It has been reported that the school board of Mason City, Iowa is utilizing AI technology to identify potentially bannable books from the district’s libraries. This comes after the state legislature passed a law limiting the availability of certain books in school libraries and classrooms. With a vast number of books to review, the district is turning to AI to flag books that may violate the new regulations. The AI software scans the books for potential depictions of sex, and so far, 19 books have been flagged for removal. The goal is to create a defensible process while complying with the law.
