The Thai constitution should be amended to protect democracy and prevent coups from undermining the constitution, according to speakers at a seminar on Saturday. They suggested including these ideas in a new constitution and increasing protections for the rule of law. Former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said coups against a “fair and legitimate” government should be regarded as treason, with coup leaders facing jail time. The question now is how to write a constitution that establishes basic guidelines for preventing future coups. Abhisit also disagreed with the idea of abolishing the Senate and independent organizations, but said that their roles should be clearly defined.
