The House of the Dragon series successfully develops engaging characters from George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, despite the challenges of adapting from a historical book. However, the show’s unnecessary changes, such as shifting the conflict from ambition to a prophecy, detracted from the early episodes and characterization. The insertion of the prophecy undermined the development of the relationship between Alicent and Rhaenyra and weakened the overall story of ambition. House of the Dragon could have focused more on the excess of ambition and resentment rather than making it about a prophecy.
