The Oscars’ First New Category in 24 Years Finds Its Winner With ‘One Battle After Another’

Cassandra Kulukundis, the casting director for “One Battle After Another,” won the first-ever Academy Award for Best Casting, marking the first new category added in over 20 years. The film, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, received 13 nominations but this is its first win. Kulukundis has a long history of collaboration with Anderson, having worked as an intern on his initial feature, “Hard Eight,” and serving as casting director for several of his films, including “Magnolia,” “There Will Be Blood,” and “Phantom Thread.” The addition of Best Casting increases the competitive Oscars to 24, with a 25th category for Best Stunt Design set to debut in 2027.
