Peter Berg, the executive producer and director of the Netflix series “Painkiller,” is not bothered by the comparison to Hulu’s “Dopesick.” He sees it as a positive because it raises awareness about the ongoing opioid crisis and the role of Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family in its origin. Berg wanted to include real-life parents who lost children to OxyContin in the series to emphasize the true impact of the crisis. He also discusses the dark and absurd tone of the show, as well as his decision to cast Taylor Kitsch, who has a personal connection to the issue. Berg believes there is room for multiple stories about the opioid crisis.
