Baloji, a Congolese-born, European-raised artist, recently premiered his debut feature film, Omen, at the Cannes Film Festival. The film draws on Baloji’s personal experiences and explores themes of identity and community. Omen tells the story of Koffi, a young Congolese man raised in Europe, who travels to Congo to mend his relationship with his family. The film incorporates elements of magic and witchcraft, which Baloji believes can be used as a metaphor for the objectification and assignment of identity. The film was shot in both Belgium and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Baloji hopes to present Africa in a different light.
