This review was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the film being covered here wouldn’t exist. The Monkey King follows the titular simian (voiced by Jimmy O. Yang) as he searches for a family and a sense of belonging. Directed by Anthony Stacchi, the film incorporates beautiful, brushstroke-inspired visuals and explores the theme of belonging with nuance. With its strong message, relatable character journey, and stunning animation, The Monkey King showcases the value of new and unique storytelling.
