Ken Kleinberg, a veteran talent lawyer, was diagnosed with Minimal Change Disease, a condition that affects kidney function. He underwent dialysis for six years before receiving a kidney transplant. Inspired by the lack of information and research on kidney disease, Kleinberg and Dr. Vito Campese launched the University Kidney Research Organization, which led to the opening of the USC/UKRO Kidney Research Center. Researchers at USC are now developing a synthetic kidney using stem cells and are preparing for human clinical trials. Kleinberg’s goal is to make kidney disease as important as cancer or heart disease.
