Hayao Miyazaki’s final film, The Boy and the Heron, will be showcased at the Toronto Film Festival on September 7 and the San Sebastian Festival on September 22. The hand-drawn animated feature, described as “a grand fantasy,” is loosely based on a 1937 novel and explores the emotional and philosophical growth of a young boy. Studio Ghibli opted for no marketing strategy in Japan, withholding trailers and plot summaries to encourage audiences to watch the film without preconceptions. This will be the fourth Miyazaki film to be featured at the San Sebastian Festival.
