Mutt, the feature debut from writer-director Vuk Lungulov-Klotz, is a day in the life story that follows Feña, a young man navigating New York City after transitioning. As he deals with relationships, obligations, and discrimination, the film rushes through scenes without giving them time to breathe, resulting in a superficial and scattered narrative. While the intention to showcase casual transphobia is admirable, the film loses focus on Feña’s interiority and becomes more about the harsh world he navigates. The relationship between Feña and his ex, John, lacks depth and the film fails to fully develop Feña’s life outside of others’ judgments. Overall, Mutt falls short of its potential.
