Disney+ Sets Korean Remake of The Americans With Lee Byung-hun, Han Ji-min

Eric Schrier, head of Disney’s international local originals, expressed initial hesitation about remaking the FX series The Americans as The Koreans. This adaptation features Lee Byung-hun and Han Ji-min as North Korean spies living in 1990s South Korea. Eventually convinced by the storytelling potential, Schrier noted that the show’s creation stemmed from organic relationships in Korea. The Koreans aims to explore family dynamics and the ideological divide, resonating culturally with its audience. With a large budget and an approach distinct from typical U.S. productions, the series represents Disney’s strategy to boost local-language content in Asia-Pacific markets.
