USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative has released its report on the diversity of movies, analyzing the top-grossing films from 2007 to 2022. The study found little improvement in representation for nonwhite characters, although there was an increase in Asian characters. Lead roles for girls and women of color also increased. However, female characters still had fewer speaking roles compared to men. The analysis also revealed a lack of representation for certain groups, including American Indian and Alaskan Native females. The report highlighted the need for more diversity on screen and behind the camera, particularly for the LGBTQ+ and disability communities. Gender equality for directors and screenwriters was also an issue. The report suggests reevaluating casting, hiring, greenlighting, and marketing processes.
