Director Ángel Manuel Soto and his film Blue Beetle have faced numerous challenges, including the lack of Latino representation in mainstream superhero films. Initially designated as an HBO Max release, the film was later upgraded to a theatrical release by Warner Bros. Unfortunately, the release coincides with the SAG-AFTRA strike, preventing the cast from promoting the film. Soto is staying in touch with the cast through a group text and continues to honor their work. The merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery led to new DC Studios leadership, but James Gunn confirmed that Blue Beetle would be part of the new DC universe, providing relief for Soto. He initially wanted to pitch a Bane film to DC but ended up working on Blue Beetle. Soto had concerns about perpetuating stereotypes but was reassured by the studio.
