In May 2023, Thailand saw the first installment of the Thai Boy Love (BL) series called “Earth & Mix.” BL series have gained popularity and increased profits throughout Asia. Thailand has been producing more than 20 BL series each year, leading to a rise in soft power and revenue from streaming platforms. The copyrights of Thai BL series purchased by other Asian countries were valued at 360 million baht in 2021. The success of Thai BL series has contributed to a more inclusive society and has led to the formation of fan clubs both within Thailand and internationally. However, it may be challenging for BL actors to transition into “straight” roles due to their association with BL series. The industry focuses more on the compatibility between the actors and their characters rather than their sexual orientation. The selection process does not discriminate based on an actor’s gender; rather, their ability to portray the characters accurately is prioritized.
