Pacific Rim had the potential to become a long-term sci-fi saga, but it never reached the same level of success as franchises like Star Wars or Star Trek. Plans for Pacific Rim 3 were in place, but the underwhelming box office results of Pacific Rim: Uprising prevented the franchise from continuing. The decline of monster movie blockbusters also made a third film unlikely.
